Frankfurt

Another trip to Afghanistan, yay! While on the way across the Atlantic from Dulles to Dubai, there was some issue with airspace restriction and/or mechanical problem on the plane, so we were diverted to Frankfurt and the flight was canceled and rescheduled for the next day. Not being ones to waste an opportunity, we took the shuttle back to the airport, and the subway to Romerburg, old town Frankfurt to see all the tourist stuff.

 This is Seufzerbrücke, bridge of sighs, based on the one in Venice

 The Ostzeile houses on the square in the old town. The statue is the Gerechtigkeitsbrunnen (Fountain of Justice)

 One the other side of the square is Zum Römer, the old town hall

 Next to Zun Romer is the Alte Nikolaikirche, an 11th century church

 Downtown Frankfurt is kind of a weird place in that there are all these new buildings and skyscrapers mixed in with all these 500 year old historical buildings. This is a new mall, MyZiel, that has a huge hole in it. Huge place, 6 floors.

 This is the old opera house, Alte Oper. Built in 1880, it was clobbered real good by allied bombing in WWII and rebuilt since then. This is the case with a lot of these historical buildings.
